1995年在加拿大举行的第58届国际体育记者协会（简称AIPS）代表大会上，并将7月2日定为“国际体育记者日”，号召所有会员国协会在7月2日这天举行各种形式的庆祝活动。AIPS于1924年7月2日在法国巴黎成立，截止2015年有125个会员国协会。中国体育记者协会在1978年AIPS莫斯科代表大会上被接纳为该组织正式会员。

At the 58th AIPS Congress held in Canada in 1995, July 2 was designated as "international sports journalists day", which called on all Member States to hold various celebrations on July 2. AIPS was founded on July 2, 1924 in Paris, France, with 125 member states as of 2015. The Chinese sports journalists association was admitted as a full member of the organization at the 1978 AIPS Moscow Congress.
